Batman who? Christian Bale is back and this time he is trading a cape for silver and black.

In a revelation that has rocked Hollywood and thrilled football fans, Oscar winner Christian Bale has had a jaw-dropping transformation to play the legendary and polarizing NFL figure Al Davis in a forthcoming biopic, Madden, which depicts the explosive origin story of the Madden video game franchise and battles occurring behind the scenes in the NFL.

Yes, that Al Davis — the controversial renegade owner of the Oakland (later Las Vegas) Raiders, famous for his slicked-back hair, dark sunglasses, and notorious slogan: “Just win, baby.”

Images from the set were leaked late Wednesday night and fans have not stopped discussing it. Bale, did not simply transform physically, Don Davis was a moving target for a multitude of actors and other actors tried to peg down various Dons and none were successful. The actor underwent an intense physical transformation including a receding hairline, heavy prosthetics, and alterations to his voice and posture (he is rumored to have changed) to also maintain Davis’s famously confrontational New York cadence.

“He disappeared in to the role,” said one anonymous crew member. “This isn’t Christian Bale pretending to be Al Davis. This is Al freakin’ Davis, back from the dead.

This isn’t Bale’s first rodeo of dramatic body transformations. He lost 60 pounds for The Machinist, then gained muscle for Batman Begins, then became a pot-bellied Dick Cheney for Vice. But fans are saying that this may be his most extreme deep dive yet.

One very viral fan tweet summed up the sentiment perfectly:

The film Madden, directed by Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights, Patriots Day), is not only about Al Davis — but also about the wild relationship between Davis and NFL Coach-turned-broadcasting Gold standard John Madden, played by Succession star Brian Cox.

The biopic is reportedly going to explore the friction of two titans; with Davis being a rebellious, sometimes vindictive, leader, and Madden evolved into a coaching genius who later made an indelible mark as the figurehead of the most successful sports video game franchise in history. A clash of titans, if you will.

The film will depict events the the rife 1970s and ‘80s; including what we can only hope to be behind the scenes chaos, locker room brawls, and plenty of segments how the NFL almost broke apart at various times; due to egos, lawsuits, and how one owner — Davis of course — had his messiah complex.

The movie tagline, revealed on a teaser poster sums it up nicely:

“Before there was a game… there was a war.”

Football politics, in-your-face locker room stuff, and the emotional toll of power, fame, and legacy.

With Christian Bale’s transformation already lighting up the internet, industry insiders are telling me that Madden is a sleeper for awards season. Peter Berg and Bao’s directorial style plus Bale’s fully-committed method acting have the potential for something that sounds niche like a sports story to become the football biopic equivalent of Oppenheimer.

Netflix is reportedly behind the project with a full theatrical release expected in February 2026 to coincide with Super Bowl buzz.

If the leaked video footage and set photos are anything to go by Bale as Al Davis could easily be the most recognizable performance Bale has ever done.

As Al might have said, “Commitment to excellence? Bale just redefined it.”
