Scarlett Johansson reveals that dating non-actors often led to jealousy because they didn’t understand her intense on-screen chemistry.
Scarlett Johansson, Hollywood powerhouse, the Black Widow, Eleanor the Great’s director, and now the actress signed to Jurassic World, was refreshingly honest in a conversation with fellow actor David Harbour.
It seemed her romantic life with people outside of the entertainment realm would go full-blown drama mode.
Johansson, 40, clarified that it isn’t always a love story to be with someone who isn’t in this particular crazy world of acting. She stated:
“I have had serious relationships with people who were not in the industry, and I found one of the challenges was that the person had no idea of what I needed to do my job … it can be a blurry line for some people.”
She explained it was not solely about acknowledging the job, there are little sparks of jealousy, but they do matter:
Scarlett explained that loyalty is not the concern. She also mentioned public attention as another type of flex in these relationships.
Johansson has had a whirlwind of relationships: her marriage to Ryan Reynolds (2008 – 2011), married French journalist Romain Dauriac (2014 – 2017), and now happily partnering with SNL’s Lindsey Buckingham, started in 2020. They have two kids: Rose, 10, and Cosmo, 3.
Although Scarlett didn’t say she would steer clear of dating anyone not in Hollywood, she did stress how complicated it has been. There is the emotional pull of connecting with someone, the demands of her career or visibility, and media scrutiny along the way.
It’s hard being in a relationship with someone who does not get public life, so she selected a partnership with someone else in entertainment, Colin Jost.
Scarlett Johansson says dating non-actors occasionally inspired jealousy, not because she was ever unfaithful, but due to the emotional aspects of acting, which can be multiplied by the public attention.
She found that, over the years, she developed a more harmonious relationship with people who are former stars, and who understood that emotional intimacy on the job.
